6 Warehouse Security Essentials

Warehouses often serve as staging grounds for companies. They keep their products there in anticipation of shipping them across the country to store locations or directly to their customers.

Security in warehouses is vital since businesses must protect the products they keep there. We’ll talk about a few warehouse security essentials in the following article.

Tamper-Resistant Security Labels

Warehouses in modern times have turned to tamper-evident stickers that they put on individual products or product lots. These stickers improve an item’s security. They indicate whether anyone has tried to steal the item or tamper with it.

They also act as strong visual deterrents. Whether you have an internal security issue or someone breaches the warehouse from the outside, these labels or stickers are tremendously effective.

Guards

There is nothing like the human touch, and having guards patrolling a warehouse saves companies untold millions. Having guards that remain vigilant helps businesses. The guards can communicate via radios and call for backup if they ever see someone stealing products or anything else suspicious happening.

Swipe Cards that Allow Entry

Many warehouses have electronic swipe cards that they issue to workers who have a valid reason for being inside. These swipe cards can be attached to a belt loop or kept in a pocket.

If someone has a swipe card, they can enter the warehouse and move around freely. If they don’t have one, they can’t gain entry since the doors will not open without one of these cards. Restricting access is one of the best security weapons that companies have.

Cameras

Cameras in warehouses are a useful visual deterrent. If a potential thief can see them mounted in strategic locations, they will know they’re being recorded. Even if they try hiding their face, the camera will record them and make a police identification possible if they manage to get away with some merchandise.

Taking Back Any Swipe Cards from Dismissed Employees

Swipe cards that allow entry to a warehouse are great for security, but companies can also make sure to recover any swipe card from a worker who they dismiss for any reason. Maybe a company fires a worker for cause, or perhaps that person simply moves on to a different job.

Either way, the company retrieving that swipe card or deactivating it is a necessary security measure. When they do so, they can feel sure this person will not return under false pretenses and walk out with some merchandise.

Excellent Lighting

All the cameras in the world probably won’t help very much if the warehouse is dimly lit. If a company pays for high-intensity arc-sodium overhead light panels, or something similar, they make sure there are no dark patches where criminals can lurk.

High-intensity lights show the merchandise, and they make it far less likely for someone to gain admittance and hide from the cameras. Skulking in the shadows becomes impossible, and the individuals monitoring the cameras can see what’s happening at all times.

Any modern warehouse should feature these safeguards.
