How to Have a More Mindful Morning

Mornings can be very stressful. Trying to get out the door on time, making sure the dog is fed, the kids are ready for school, and all the lights are turned off seems hectic enough without adding more tasks to the list. What if I told you that waking up a bit earlier and adding a few mindfulness exercises would make you less stressed?

As a busy professional, you are more likely to experience stress and anxiety throughout the day, but mindfully starting your mornings can lower your stress and improve your productivity throughout the day. Some of society’s “highest achievers” are known to wake up early and practice essential mindful tasks before getting their days started.

Here are five ways to make your mornings more mindful:

1. Exercise

Incorporating exercise into your morning routine is a great way to de-stress before heading into the office. Exercise releases endorphins that trigger positive emotions. Try taking a run in your favorite women’s sneakers or doing a bit of yoga before taking your morning shower. This will give you a refreshing pep in your step before starting your day.

2. Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Eating a healthy breakfast is something that has been pushed into our heads since we were children. While it can be easy to brush off, a healthy breakfast is essential to a great day. Taking care of your body physically is the first step to a more mindful and productive life. Waking up a bit earlier to sit and eat a healthy breakfast with your family is a great way to start your day.

3. Practice Positive Affirmations

Affirmations are short, positive statements that you say into the universe. After all, the more you hear something, the more likely it is that you believe it to be true. Saying positive affirmations centered around yourself is an important part of developing your self-esteem. Higher self-esteem leads to becoming a better leader.

4. Journal

Wellness journals and journal prompts are a great way to release your emotions onto paper. Getting these anxious thoughts out of your head and de-stressing through writing is a great way to start the day with a clear mind.

Often, these prompts will provide you with a guide on what to write. They often ask you to write how you are feeling, any stresses you have about the day, how your surroundings are making you feel, and what your intentions are for the day. The peace that this can give you will lead to a more productive day in the office.

5. Resist Technology

It is common for people to look at their phones first thing in the morning, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t toxic. The negativity that is often awaiting us on our phones can lead to a bad day before even getting out of bed. It is best to avoid looking at your phone for at least an hour after waking up to avoid unnecessary stress and a more mindful morning.

Adding these practices into your routine can lead to more mindful mornings that are certain to improve your mental and physical health in the long term. Your accomplishments and productivity will also receive a boost from practicing mindfulness.
