How You can Overcome Adversity

adversity-man-walking-on-wire-mess

Your ability to overcome adversity is essential to achieving your goals.  Adversity is something that we all have to face.  It can hold us back and be a challenge to our motivation.  It can even make us feel that we are stuck, with no way out.

The good news is that overcoming adversity builds mental strength, character and resilience.  It even strengthens our will.  During these difficult times, these are the moments where you will develop in ways that would not otherwise be possible.

Adversity is overcome by moving forward.  How do you keep moving forward?

There are three types of adversity that you may come across:  events you have no control or influence over, situations resulting from decisions you made, and circumstances caused by someone else’s actions.

Here are ways how you can overcome adversity:

Be aware of and accept that adversity is inevitable in life

Your journey will not always take you through calms waters.  There will be raging storms that you will have to face while getting to your destination.  There will be events beyond your control or influence.

As soon as you can accept this fact, you can start looking for ways to navigate through the storm.

Adjust your Perspective

Try to look at your obstacle from a different angle.  Sometimes taking a step back allows you to see a way through.  Especially if your situation is a cause of a decision you made or a result of someone else’s actions.  What actions led you to this situation?  What can you do to avoid the same situation in the future?

Keep your Purpose Alive

Sometimes in your quest to achieve a goal, you may be faced with several obstacles.  Keep your vision and your goals in mind.  Remembering the Why will help you when the How becomes complicated.  Keep the End Result in mind and let that be your compass during the difficult moments.

Build your Internal Strength

Overcoming adversity in itself builds internal strength.  Your ability and speed in overcoming it will depend greatly on your internal strength.  When you want to build your physical strength, you develop a workout routine.  The same is true for building your internal strength.  You need to exercise your mind.  Work on creating habits that will build on your discipline, energy levels and emotional intelligence.  Working on building your faith can also go a long way.

There are several ways you can build on these traits; reading books on emotional intelligence, discipline or any other subject you feel would help you build on your internal strength.  Subscribing to blogs such as this one can help you on your quest as well.

Build your External Resources

No successful person has achieved their success on their own.  At some point, they had to rely on the help of someone else.  Developing a strong support system will help you in building your internal strength as well.  Networking with people who strive to do and be more will inspire you to do the same.  Take inspiration from others.

GET BACK UP

No matter what, commit yourself to the fact that you need to get up.  It is not the fact that you fell down that counts, it’s the fact that you got up that matters.

Here is a post from a week-long motivation series that I recently published.  This one is a compilation of some commencement speeches to help motivate you.

Find out ways to motivate yourself, whether it be music, books or working out.  Refer to it when you feel your energy levels waning.

Keep going and don’t give up.  Let me know how I can help.
