Everyone is faced with struggles at one or many points in their life. How you react during these struggles will determine how quickly and how often you rise up above your difficulties and achieve success. Your Mindset is the key fact in the Psychology of Success.
When I was in the 5th grade, I was running up and down the sidewalk and slipped. I ended up breaking a bone on my foot. Six weeks later, the cast was removed and I was free of its constraints. Not long after in a similar way, I broke the same foot in the same place. I had to wait another six weeks before I could take it out.
I was very active and didn’t let my cast stop me from playing. In order to walk, I would stick my broken foot out to the side and hobble. Once the cast was removed, it took me a long time before I was able to walk straight again.
At 10 years old, walking with a cast for a total of 12 weeks, changed my walking pattern and it was extremely difficult to break the habit. In fact, I had to be reminded several times by my father that I was walking with my left leg to the side. I had to force myself to be conscious of my walk.
Your mindset once it is set, can become difficult to change. A fixed mindset does not get changed simply because someone points it out. You need to be intentional about it.
It can be easy to fall into the pattern of a fixed mindset instead of a growth mindset.
When things go wrong, it is easier to look at the faults in others and blame limited resources, instead of the strength it takes to take accountability. The fact that you are reading this post means that you have a mindset of learning, making your personal development a priority.
Life has a way to test your mindset often. If you fail to learn from a mistake, you often find yourself having to retake the same test.
Take the Mindset Challenge today. Choose one area of your life where you will focus on changing one of your mindsets.
Some mindset examples that slow down progress:
- I have no time
- I will start on that project when I have more time
- I will be happier when (fill in the blank)
- You cannot teach leadership
- I am not good enough
- I cannot learn French
- This person is preventing me from achieving my goals
Start small and work on building momentum. Fuel your mindset through the right podcasts, books or blog posts that will help you in the area you have chosen.
Choose an accountability partner you trust and who cares about your growth. Someone who will communicate with good intentions. Have this person let you know when “you are walking crooked from a cast you no longer have”.
