One of the most popular words in today’s social media is entrepreneur. In fact, every day you can find news articles, podcast episodes or YouTube videos on the subject. What makes the subject of entrepreneurship so enticing? Besides the fact that being an Entrepreneur means you are usually working for yourself, the traits required to become a successful Entrepreneur is what makes the subject so interesting. However, this is not what this 3-part series is about. This series is about personal branding and its importance, no matter if you are working for yourself or someone else.
No matter what your occupation and whether you may realize it or not, you have a personal brand. Whether you work as an Accountant, a Waitress, a Lawyer or a Construction worker, personal branding needs to be part of your goals. When someone describes who you are, what traits do you feel will come to mind? These traits represent your value in the marketplace. If you want to increase your value in the marketplace, it is essential you market yourself and your career as a brand.
One of the best ways you can increase your personal brand is to act like an Entrepreneur.
Dictionary.com defines Entrepreneur as : “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.”. Entrepreneurs are those people who seek out a need and fill it. Thus, if you want to work on your personal branding, seek out a need and fill it, independent of your service, industry or market.
Start thinking today like an Entrepreneur and prioritize personal branding. Looking for a promotion in your current job? Or just looking to succeed at a higher level? Then work on your value in the market place.
In my 3 previous employments, I didn’t go out looking for the job, nor did I apply. The opportunity came to me because I was referred to by someone in the retail industry. All three times, it was for a higher position. These opportunities were given because I continue to work hard at treating myself as an Entrepreneur. The question I ask my self on a constant basis is, “How can I add more value?”.
