Christmas and Holiday Seasons are the time of year when the pressure to be perfect intensifies. If you walk the malls in December, especially 1 week before Christmas, what do you see? In retail, we often hear that customers are most grumpy during the holiday season. Why is that?
We plan the perfect Christmas meal. We try to shop for the perfect presents and imagine it the way we want it to go. Only, it rarely happens exactly as planned. When we host a party, we are too busy trying to get everything right that we forget what the holidays are really about.
Are your expectations of the perfect holiday real? Are you setting yourself up for disappointment? Instead of being discouraged, we can use our disappointment to remind ourselves of the reason why Christmas is so important. It is not about getting every single part right. It is not about being the perfect host, or finding the perfect gift. Often, we spend most of the month rushing around that when the day finally arrives, we have no more energy left to truly enjoy it.
Christmas is all about having those intimate moments with the people who are most important to us. It is a time for the sharing of ourselves. It is a time to be present in the moment.
“The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and of generosity and of goodness. It illuminates the picture window of the soul, and we look out upon the world’s busy life and become more interested in people than in things.” – Thomas S. Monson
Today, commit to yourself that you will find your Moments. Christmas is found in the heart. Don’t rely too much on the material things and miss the gift of your time and love. Don’t worry about being the perfect host but remember just to “be present”.
