Types of Dinosaurs

It’s almost ridiculous how many dinosaurs existed. There are over a thousand named species of dinosaurs, and scientists think hundreds are waiting to be discovered.

So, the average person can’t know everything there is to know about dinosaurs and put them all into their minds.

But if you’re interested in learning a little about these fascinating creatures, keep reading to explore everything you need about types of dinosaurs.

Sauropods

These were the largest and heaviest dinosaurs, with some species weighing up to 100 tons. Sauropods had long necks, tails, small heads, and four thick legs.

They were herbivorous and used their long necks to reach high vegetation. Despite their size, they had small brains relative to their body size. Some scientists believe that they may have had a relatively simple social structure.

Theropods

These were bipedal, meat-eating dinosaurs that ranged in size from small to very large. They had sharp teeth, powerful jaws, and sharp claws on their feet.

Some theropods were fast and agile, while others were slow and lumbering. Some were solitary hunters, while others hunted in packs.

Ornithopods

These were herbivorous dinosaurs that walked on two legs and had beak-like mouths. They ranged in size from small to very large and had a variety of body shapes.

Some had large crests on their heads, while others had long tails or duck-like bills. Ornithopods were among the most common and successful of all dinosaurs, and their fossils have been found on every continent except Antarctica.

Ceratopsians

These were herbivorous dinosaurs that had bony frills on their heads and often had horns. They ranged in size from small to very large and had a variety of body shapes.

Some had long horns on their heads, while others had short, stubby horns. Ceratopsians were among the last groups of dinosaurs to evolve before the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs

Spinosaurus

Spinosaurus is an enormous carnivorous dinosaur that lived in the middle Cretaceous period approximately 95-100 million years ago. It was one of the largest known land predators, measuring up to 15 meters long, and featured a long, low, spiny sail along its back.

Spinosaurus was likely semi-aquatic and was adapted for hunting fish, amphibians, small dinosaurs, and other animals in rivers and swamps. It also had a unique bone structure in its skull, which would have allowed for powerful muscles for strangulation as well as greater jaw strength.

If you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, you may be interested to know that there are even Spinosaurus tooth available for purchase as a unique addition to your collection.

Pterosaurs

While not technically dinosaurs, these were flying reptiles that lived during the same time as dinosaurs. They had long wings made of skin and could soar through the air.

They ranged in size from small to very large, with some having wingspans of up to 40 feet. Pterosaurs were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight, and they were highly successful during the Mesozoic era.
