Enclose & Secure the Construction Site
If you do not have a fence or other safety measures securing your construction site, thieves will have a much easier time stealing materials, equipment, and machines. A fence will keep people away from the perimeter of the work site and make the area much safer for residents. Consider installing lighting, trespassing signs, and cameras to further deter thieves.
Store Equipment & Machines in a Facility
Do you have an enclosure somewhere on the construction site that you can use as a facility to house your equipment and machinery? A storage area is your best line of defense for securing your high-quality construction machines. Try not to leave them out, even if you plan on using the same machine the following day. If you do not have an enclosure, we suggest circling your larger machines around the smaller ones to prevent someone from attaching a tow to the equipment and driving away with it.
Turn Off Equipment Circuit Breakers
A machine is much harder to steal when the person can’t get it running. Turn off the circuit breakers on your equipment before leaving at the end of the day to avoid theft. If someone does come along with the intention of stealing something, they won’t make it very far with your machines!
Perform Employee Background Checks
Unfortunately, sometimes, an employee or contractor could walk away with your equipment. Ensure you’re performing background checks if you want to prevent theft on your construction site. These checks will alert you if anyone has a criminal record, allowing you to inquire further and make the best hiring choice for your business.
Keep a Record of Your Equipment
It will be easier to know which equipment and materials are missing if you keep an inventory of everything. Update an inventory log daily so that if anything were to happen, you could quickly figure out what is missing. Write down the make of the equipment, the model, and the serial number so that you can identify your missing machinery with ease.
Materials and smaller equipment are the easiest to steal for thieves, and while heavy machinery is more difficult to steal discreetly, it still happens on construction sites. Investing in new materials and equipment can become costly, especially if you deal with stolen products frequently. Remember to keep everything in a secure location, and use security systems to prevent thieves from taking an interest in your items.
