As a kid, I grew up seeing acts of bravery on T.V. The hero that saved the Princess from the monster was brave. The Fireman who ran into a burning building to save another person defined bravery for me. As I grew older, I realized that being brave actually means so much more.
Those heroic acts still ring true as a great definition of bravery. However, you don’t need to look too far to start being able to identify braveness in others. Even in you.
“Bran thought about it. ‘Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid?’
‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones
My Dad came into this country almost 50 years ago from Portugal. At that time, he left his parents and siblings and all he knew to travel to Canada with one desire. To make a better life for himself and for his future family. He didn’t know the language nor where his journey would take him, only a determination to make it work. He grew up in a farm and found himself in a strange Country.
That was Brave!
Sometimes being brave is just about showing up to work every day. It’s about knowing what you want and going for it.
It’s about facing challenges that make you want to fall down and stay down but finding the strength to get up again. Then doing it all over again the next day.
I have a couple of people really close to me who face difficult challenges on a daily basis. Some battle depression while others a debilitating disease. The determination to get back up every day, is Brave.
There is also another definition of Brave that I hope you’ve thought about. The courage it takes to go after something you want despite the naysayers around you.
You won’t always have the support of those around you. Sometimes, you will share your dream with someone and they will doubt your success. They may even tell you not to bother even trying. There is no point.
Know what you want and then go for it. Yes, there may be risks. You may even fail a few times before you find success. Be BRAVE and keep going for it.
Forget the doubters and never doubt yourself. Do it, despite the FEAR.
That is the definition of BRAVE!
