In my previous post, I defined Personal Philosophy as; “the most basic beliefs, concepts and attitudes of an individual or group.” I also discussed, the importance of understanding your personal philosophy.
In short,
Our personal philosophy Fuels our Attitude.
Our Attitude determines the quantity and quality of our Actions.
Our Actions determine our Result.
If you believe in the importance of knowing your personal philosophy, the next question might be, “How do you determine what your personal philosophy is”?
There are several different types of philosophies, philosophy of; spirituality, family, happiness, health, business and more. You probably already have your basic beliefs in each area.
To define your personal philosophy in any one of this areas follow these 4 Steps:
STEP 1: The Reflection Step
The first step should always be to take a moment to reflect. Take the time to understand your environment. In this case, your environment is you. In order to help yourself reflect, ask yourself the following questions:
- What are you passionate about?
- What directs your actions and decisions especially the impulsive ones?
- Why are your beliefs in each area important to you?
- If you had an extra hour in your day, what would you want to spend time doing?
STEP 2: Research
Now that you have an idea of what your basic beliefs are, don’t stop there. Find out what other types of philosophies are out there. You can stick to what interests you and get a sense for big ideas.
There is a popular saying that goes: “You don’t know what you don’t know”.
So my answer is,
“Go and find out”
How?
- Read different types of books in different subjects. This will help you get a sense for big ideas.
- Read what people are saying on social media. Is there anything that you read that stands out for you? Anything that hits home?
- Keep a journal and keep notes of things that interest you.
- Talk to other people in your different circles and get their points of view.
STEP 3: Be Flexible
Keeping an open mind is important. It is a great way to learn new information.
When my husband and I got married over 16 years ago, we had a meeting with our priest. He recommended that we visit other churches and denominations, in order to see what is out there. At first I was surprised that he would suggest other churches but I really respected his wanting us to broaden our horizons. He didn’t want us to fear knowledge but embrace it.
This way, whatever you choose as your philosophies, it will be an educated choice.
STEP 4: Don’t Commit
Your personal philosophy is an ongoing process. Your core beliefs tend to remain fairly similar but can evolve according to your experiences.
Be patient and realize that your opinions can change with new information.
Please share in the comments one of your Personal Philosophies.
