“You can’t hit a home run unless you step up to the plate. You can’t catch a fish unless you put your line in the water. You can’t reach your goals if you don’t try.” Kathy Seligman
Many people feel as if they’re adrift in the world. They work hard, but they don’t seem to be getting anywhere worthwhile to them. They may have been told that they need to get good at goal setting in order to get what they want. So they take out a pen and paper, make a list of goals they want to achieve and then wait. Wait….and wait some more. Nothing happened?
Goal setting is an important part of the process. After all, when you start your car in the morning, I bet you know where it is your going. You probably also know the exact route you will take to get there and the alternate routes should you get stuck in traffic. Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality.
This, however, is only Step 1.
Some people get stuck in the goal-setting and planning process, trying to make everything perfect before they start. They keep ironing out the details and then find more ironing that they need to do. I have had a podcast project on my “to-do” list for a while. I keep trying to find ways to make it better. I know that the only way I can make it better is to start first. To put it out there then worry about trying to improve on it.
“You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.” – Edmund Hillary
I love the above quote by Edmund Hillary. You don’t have to get it perfect to start. You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things either. You just need to start and keep pushing forward.
One step at a time
One goal at a time
Worry about the details once you get going.
“Life’s up and downs provide windows of opportunity to determine your values and goals. Think of using all obstacles as stepping stones to build the life you want.” – Marsha Sinetar
Things will never be perfect. It doesn’t exist.
Goal setting is step 1. Taking action is the next step

What have you been putting off for too long? Take that step. Take a chance on yourself. Worry about the details later. Go after that goal, today.
