We have all heard about bots — robots on the Internet who can be programmed to do just about anything you want them to do. Today I will introduce you to a kind of bot called an “Internet bot” and show you how to build your own, for fun.
Internet bots are used by hackers to distribute viruses or launch attacks on other computers from a safe location. This is called a “botnet attack,” and it is the reason why anti-virus applications should always be updated with the latest virus definitions. In this article I will only discuss non-malicious bots that all Internet users can benefit from while surfing the web, checking e-mail, or sending instant messages — not creating a botnet to send spam.

The basis for his conclusion should sound familiar: “The question was triggered by an online debate among Indian users on Twitter, who were trying to figure out which of two bank accounts — one belonging to a ‘Hindu’ and another reportedly held by someone with a ‘Muslim name’ — had more money in it.” It’s really not much different than what happened when PayPal froze $45,000 meant for helping rape victims in India because they “suspected foul play.” Such attitudes, which are obviously held by the companies involved, should come as little surprise. Both PayPal and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) are American corporations that benefit from nationalism — to the tune of billions of dollars. A vandal might pull such a prank by climbing onto your lawn in the dark of night, but there’s no such risk on the World Wide Web.
