There has been more and more spotlight on gender equality and the growth of women in leadership positions. We read about the barriers to women’s advancement into leadership positions. Concepts such as glass ceilings have become popularized and have become a symbol of the movement.
According to Catalyst, while the share of Women in Senior roles globally is increasing incrementally, the scale is still tipped to one side.
- In 2019, 29% of senior management roles are held by women, the highest number ever on record.
- 87% of global businesses have at least one woman in a senior management role in 2019.
The proportion of women in senior leadership differs by role:
- 43% of human resources directors are women compared to 17% of sales directors and 16% of chief information officers.
While I advocate that every position should always go to the right person, numbers may show that there is still bias in who ultimately gets the position. The differences become more apparent depending on the industry where there is a large gender gap.
